Congratulations to UPEI student Zamzam Aden. Zamzam was the refugee woman selected by the Council’s bursary committee members to receive the Inge Blackett Memorial Bursary. Zamzam, in the photo above with Chairperson Cathy Rose, attended the December 6th Memorial Service and lit a candle on behalf of newcomers to PEI.

The $500 Inge Blackett Memorial Bursary is for a woman-identified student who entered Canada as a refugee and is pursuing education or training. This bursary remembers past Council Vice-Chairperson Inge Blackett, who when she died was the last Holocaust survivor on PEI.

Congratulations to Holland College student Sarah Whitney, recipient of our Diane Kays Memorial Bursary. She came into the office recently for a physically-distanced photo with Chairperson Cathy Rose. We were inspired to hear some of the struggles she has overcome to advance her education and make life better for her family.

The $500 bursary is for a woman-identified student in a post-secondary program at UPEI, Holland College, or Collège de l’île who is pursuing a field where women are under-represented or who is an active advocate for women’s equality. The bursary remembers past Council Chairperson Diane Kays, who was a strong voice for vulnerable women and families on PEI.

The deadline to apply for the 2022 bursaries above is October 15, 2022.

Congratulations also to Rhea Gallant, the recipient of this year’s PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Engineering Bursary. She is in the Sustainable Design Engineering Program at UPEI.

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Engineering Bursary for Women is awarded to women studying Engineering at UPEI, in recognition and support of women pursuing non-traditional fields; and it is awarded to a woman entering third year who maintains a passing average and demonstrates financial need. The bursary was established in 1995 by the Government of PEI on the twentieth Anniversary of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women. The bursary supports the Council’s work to encourage young women to choose careers in math and science fields and also pays tribute to the fourteen women engineering students who were murdered at L’Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.

This bursary is administered through the Registrar’s Office at UPEI and its deadline is October 1. For more information about this Engineering bursary, email [email protected] or call 902-620-5187.
