In 1992, the Advisory Council began to hold the Annual Equality Recognition Awards as part of International Women’s Day celebrations, in order to help bring to light the valuable contributions of women in the community. In 2003, The five categories for the awards were: Individual, Organization or Group, Employer, Lifetime Achievement, and Special Recognition. These awards recognized many people and accomplishments that contributed to gender equality for the benefit of the whole community.
The 2003 International Women’s Day celebration marked the close of the Annual Equality Recognition Awards. Fridge magnets were made and given out to recognize the collective contributions of all Island women. The design depicts a tree with women’s faces throughout the roots and branches, a design by local artist Elizabeth Vessey. The magnet was signed by Kirstin Lund, Chairperson of the Advisory Council from 2003 to 2008.
Each magnet reads: “The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women honours ALL ISLAND WOMEN, in recognition that every day women work hard all across this province to advance equality. – Kirstin Lund, Advisory Council Chairperson.”
Also pictured is a plaque for the 2001 International Women’s Day Celebration and Equality Recognition Awards. It features the same tree design by Elizabeth Vessey and describes details of the celebration and other IWD events.
The plaque reads:

WHY?
Millions of women around the world mark International Women’s Day (IWD) each year on March 8, a day to celebrate women’s rights and International peace. The origins of IWD have been traced to labour strikes on March 8 in both 1857 and 1908 in New York City. Workers were protesting overcrowded, dangerous working conditions and the exploitative wages paid to women textile workers.
