PEI ADVISORY COUNCIL ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – PERMANENT FULL-TIME

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women is seeking to hire an exceptional individual to serve as our next Executive Director.

The Executive Director is employed by and reports to the nine-member, government-appointed board of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Chairperson appointed as the Council’s CEO, who receives an honorarium for her volunteer time.

The Advisory Council on the Status of Women is an arms-length government advisory agency with a legislated mandate to advise the provincial government and to educate the public on matters that relate to gender equality. In its understanding of “women,” the Council includes all women-identifying people, and in Council’s work strives to ensure gender non-binary, gender-diverse, and gender non-conforming people are included.

The Council describes its core purpose this way (2022-2027):
We are a catalyst and collective voice for equity, passionate about advancing women’s equality, health, and wellbeing, and full participation in the social, cultural, economic, and political life in PEI, through

  • Public policy analysis and advice
  • Advocacy and public education
  • Research and consultation
  • Remembering and celebrating women

Our vision is gender equality for all Islanders.

Core programming includes the Equality Report Card and the Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence, and the Council is actively represented on many province-wide committees and coalitions, focused on poverty elimination/basic income guarantee, preventing gender-based violence, supporting caregivers and caregiving, and women’s and gender-diverse people’s mental and physical health.

To serve as the next Executive Director, the Advisory Council is seeking someone with personal qualities including these:

The Advisory Council welcomes applicants with the following demonstrated and applied skills:

  • Leadership and team management, of paid staff and volunteers.
  • Operational and administrative oversight, from day-to-day office management to high-level meetings.
  • Engagement and partnership with Board/Council, government, and non-governmental organizations, including working closely with other leaders.
  • Public relations and communications, including confidence as a spokesperson in media and representing the Council to external groups.
  • Research and policy development, to lead internal governance policy; to oversee Council recommendations to government; and to act as a knowledgeable advisor on government policy within Council and externally, always while applying gender and diversity analysis.
  • Program and project management, to set priorities, develop work plans, and lead province-wide public education initiatives from concept to execution.
  • Financial management, including operational budgeting and fiscal oversight, maintaining controls, and reporting, with Council Executive, to ensure accountability in a context of public sector accounting standards (PSAS).
  • Support and mentorship are also an important part of your role.

The Advisory Council asks applicants to describe their experience, including the following:

  • Post-secondary degree and/or equivalent work experience in a relevant field (such as, but not limited to, diversity and social justice studies, public administration, business administration, public policy, social work, communications, or law).
  • Senior-level management experience in a government, nonprofit, or public sector advisory agency.
  • Proven success in leading diverse teams, with the ability to cultivate an inclusive and supportive work culture.
  • In-depth knowledge of governmental structures, policies, and processes within the PEI provincial government.
  • Demonstrated capacities for building healthy, collaborative relationships with individuals and groups in and across multiple sectors.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent financial management skills and experience
    • Experience with and knowledge of public sector accounting standards an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to a range of stakeholders
    • French-English bilingualism an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of gender and diversity analysis and of intersectional feminist principles and processes
    • Experience with PEI equity-deserving organizations an asset
    • Lived experience of seeking equity in the face of discrimination and exclusion an asset

POSITION DETAILS

  • Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week); some flexibility in schedule may be negotiated
  • Location: Advisory Council on the Status of Women office, Sherwood Business Centre, 161 St. Peter’s Road, Charlottetown, PE. Primarily in-office; hybrid work arrangements may be negotiated
  • Salary: $70,200-$78,000 per year ($36-$40/hr), based on skills and experience
  • Benefits: Health and pension benefits equivalent to PEI public service; supportive workplace policies including paid sick days and special leaves
  • Start Date: November 3, 2025
