Rebecca (Becky) Tramley is retiring from the ACSW this week. Hard to believe she has been with the Status of Women for 40 years! For 4 decades, she has been a steadfast and faithful employee and has seen many changes in Council staff, members, and Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women; in provincial legislation, programs, and services to address gender equality; and in the lived reality of women and gender diverse Islanders.
Becky has held close the value and inherent equality of women, beginning with her childhood experiences. Those values were strengthened by her work with many likeminded Island feminists throughout her career at the Advisory Council and by the strong relationships she has forged with other remarkable women who were employed or appointed to Council from government.
Through all the transitions and the many improvements in the way we view diversity of gender expression, orientation, ability, race, culture, and status, there are ever-evolving challenges to equality. Sadly, many issues remain the same, or are manifestly different and still awful. We still must advocate for sexual assault and violence prevention, equitable heath access and outcomes for women, especially those in caregiving roles, and livable incomes and economic equity.
The Advisory Council will surely miss Becky’s compassionate and welcoming personality, her attention to detail, her memory of processes and procedures, her appreciation for Advisory Council history, and her care of Council members and staff colleagues. She loved being the official photographer at events, being teased about her quirks, and sharing a good laugh amidst the seriousness of the daily work of gender equality. Becky also shared her kindness in supplying co-workers with COSTCO treats, and her love of gadgets, good food, and anything cats!
As Becky makes the transition to retirement, there will be challenge and loss, but there will also be more biking on the North Shore, golfing, and time with friends and family, her cats, and her partner Daniel. We wish Becky all the best and send her much love and appreciation from Council and staff, past and present.
Happy Retirement Becky!
