The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women is delighted to be hosting an in-person International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration on Friday March 8, from 3:00-5:00pm in the Rotary Auditorium of the Charlottetown Library and Learning Centre. Farahnaz Rezaei will emcee the event.
The 2024 theme for IWD is Invest in Women: Accelerate Equality. Investing in women is a human rights imperative for building inclusive and equitable societies. Progress for women benefits us all. March 8 is a day to celebrate the achievements, strength, and worth of women, and also a day to advocate for safety, equity and protection of human rights for women and girls globally. This International Women’s Day, let’s come together to transform challenges into opportunities and shape a better future for all!
The afternoon will begin with Indigenous Round Dance led by Wolastoqi sisters Sophia and Ellie Bourque. Monelli Rahmatian will perform Persian dance and encourage audience participation, and members of the PEI Sikh community will share their unique music and ritual. Musician Carlie Howell will also offer a musical performance. Community leaders from various organizations will talk about their gender equality initiatives, and as usual, the afternoon will end with Shannon Scales leading the IWD anthem “Bread and Roses.”
International Women’s Day celebrations are open to the public, free of charge, and people of all genders and identities are welcome. We also encourage children to attend; there will be a supervised kids’ corner set up with activities for them. Light refreshments will be catered by Cured Creations. Choosing to wear a face mask is welcome but not required.
